How can I change the connector on my ATH-M40 or ATH-D40 headphones?
The best way to change the connector is to have the cable changed. The replacement cables are available to order for UK customers directly through our Service department by calling 0113 277 1441 (press option 4 for Service via the auto-attendant). For customers based outside the UK, please contact your local Authorised Audio-Technica Distributor. For a curly style cable order the ATH-M50 Cord assembly, part number 136302080. For a straight cable order the ATH-M30 cord assembly part number 136301470.
To change the cable, first remove each ear pad by placing your finger under the inside of the pad, pulling diagonally out and up away from the headphone working the pad loose all the way around the ear cup.
Unscrew the 4 screws under the pad and separate the ear cup. Inside the ear cup you will see the cable attached to a screw-port on the PCB board. Loosen the screws to release each of the 3 cables then untie the knot to remove the cable. Thread your new cable into the headphone and loosely knot.
Then place the three cables into the correctly marked screw-port and tighten, check they are held firmly in place then put the knotted cable into the original slot.
Put the pads in place by pushing the pad lip into the gap on one side, using your finger underneath the inside of the pad to lift the pad and work the lip into the gap all the way around. You can also use a flathead screwdriver under the lip of the pad, taking care not to damage it. Work it over the top of the headphone then into the gap.
Our Service Department can also change cables for you.
