Audio-Technica Scoops Audio Pro Customer Service Award

Release Date: 17 November 2009

The inaugural Audio Pro Industry Excellence Awards has seen Audio-Technica collect the award for Best After-Sales Support in the Studio & Broadcast category. Announced in the November issue of the magazine, the Award recognises the effort that Audio-Technica has made in continually improving customer service in 2009.

While the company was lauded in an anonymous survey (conducted by Music Tech magazine) for its customer service earlier in the year, Audio-Technica has consistently worked to raise the bar in this area of its business. In response to customer needs, improvements have included extended opening hours for Audio-Technica’s customer service department, opening of the sales office over the Christmas period, the introduction of a lifetime warranty for 40 Series, Artist and Artist Elite microphones and investing in NVQ Customer Service training for all sales staff.

Harvey Roberts, Audio-Technica’s senior UK marketing manager, said, “"We were extremely pleased to learn of Audio-Technica's award for Best After-Sales Support. It's very gratifying to have the effort that we put into staff customer service training noticed and appreciated.

"I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who voted for us in the API Awards, and indeed to the magazine for instigating a well-conceived and meaningful awards competition. We look forward to the challenge of retaining the crown in future."

Audio-Technica Introduces Ribbon Microphones For First Time

Release Date: 11 November 2009

Audio-Technica has unveiled two exciting new additions – the company’s first ever ribbon microphones – to its popular 40 Series mic range. The AT4080 and AT4081 feature groundbreaking Audio-Technica design, with no less than 18 patents pending on the new models. Created from the ground up, the AT4080 and AT4081 convincingly solve the problems of fragility and low output that have traditionally plagued ribbon mics, in part through the use of a proprietary MicroLinear ribbon imprint for excellent durability.

The AT4080 features dual ribbon construction for pronounced sensitivity, while the single ribbon AT4081 is of a low-profile stick design to allow for flexible positioning options. A significant degree of hand production, including ribbon corrugation, imprint and assembly, is involved in the construction of the new mics.

While ensuring increased ruggedness, the design of the new microphones also retains the sought-after ribbon mic tonal character. Both the AT4080 and AT4081 deliver smooth, articulate tone for recording, broadcast and sound reinforcement applications, with powerful N50 rare-earth neodymium magnets employed for high output. A classic figure-of-eight polar pattern is common to both phantom-powered models, as is the ability to handle high SPL, making them suitable for a wider range of situations than is typical of ribbon microphones.

As part of the 40 Series, the AT4080 and AT4081 are covered by Audio-Technica’s unique Lifetime Warranty, and also qualify for a free two-week trial under the Company’s First Impressions scheme. For details see http://www.eu.audio-technica.com/firstimpressions

Audio-Technica Unveils Unique ‘First Impressions’ Microphone Trial Scheme

Release Date: 01 October 2009

Audio-Technica is to launch an exciting ‘microphone audition’ initiative on 5 October 2009. For the first time, the scheme will allow customers real certainty that they’re buying the right mic for a particular situation.

The First Impressions programme allows users to trial, free of charge, up to two Audio-Technica microphones (supplied by the Company from its Leeds office) from the 40 Series, Artist Series and Artist Elite Series for a two week period. Musicians and singers will be able to test mics in their own specific working environment – with their own instruments, recording set-up or PA rig – vastly expanding their experience of the microphones compared to a limited in-store demo. The extended audition allows real peace of mind, enabling users to perfectly match a microphone to their requirements.

Customers can also rest easy in the knowledge that having invested in the perfect microphone with First Impressions, it will be covered by Audio-Technica’s unique lifetime warranty, which applies to each of the ranges involved in the programme.

Further to the reassurance of making the right purchase decision, customers even benefit from saving money with First Impressions. A discount voucher (redeemable at a participating Audio-Technica dealer and valid for three months) is included with the requested trial microphones and can be applied to the purchase of a mic from any of the above series.

Full details of the programme will be found at http://www.audio-technica.com/firstimpressions where users can register to be contacted by Audio-Technica’s First Impressions team and take part in the scheme.

Audio-Technica Senior UK marketing manager Harvey Roberts says of First Impressions, “This is a very exciting move for Audio-Technica and our customers. We know that buyers find purchase decisions difficult when faced with a microphone range as comprehensive as Audio-Technica’s. The chance to try mics in a real live performance or recording situation means that customers can be completely confident in choosing the right Audio-Technica microphone for them.”

Audio-Technica Answers Wireless Users’ Questions On Digital Dividend Review

Release Date: 17 September 2009

In response to a growing need for wireless systems users to understand the impact of OFCOM’s Digital Dividend Review in 2012, Audio-Technica has produced a thorough DDR FAQ document, freely available on its website at www.eu.audio-technica.com/en/support/product/wireless

The document covers a wide range of questions, from which frequencies will be affected and which will be available beyond 2012 to whether hardware can be modified or need replacement as a result of the review. Written in clear, easy-to-read language, the FAQ will be useful to anyone likely to be impacted by the Digital Dividend Review, whether Audio-Technica users and customers or not.

Audio-Technica senior UK marketing manager Harvey Roberts said, “Such is the importance of the DDR issue that we felt it important to make our knowledge available to the industry at large with this document. Everyone from dealers and distributors to musicians and production personnel need to be aware of changes in wireless in the next two years. This is bigger than a brand-specific concern, so while the website FAQ mentions Audio-Technica product where applicable, the vast majority of the questions covered apply to all brands and all wireless users.”

Audio-Technica Caters To Studio and Broadcast Professionals at IBC2009

Release Date: 10 September 2009

Audio-Technica unveils a wide range of new microphone and headphone products at IBC2009 between 11-15 September. New additions to the popular lifetime-warranted 40 Series studio microphone range and Broadcast and Production series are amongst the exciting new offerings to be launched at the event.

For the first time, Audio-Technica will be showing two ribbon microphones at IBC. The AT4080 and AT4081 are side address microphones with figure-of-eight polar patterns; both are phantom-powered and use aluminium ribbons for enhanced durability. The large AT4080 features two ribbons, while the slim AT4081 has one and, unusually for ribbon microphones, each is robust enough to be used lying down.

Also new to the 40 Series, the AT4050ST is a stereo version of the widely-used AT4050. The new stereo microphone has a pair of elements positioned at 90° to each other in a Mid-Side set-up, with one element in cardioid mode and the other configured as figure-of-eight. The AT4050ST allows for different output options, namely M/S, Stereo 90° and Stereo 126° to suit different working situations.

Finally for the 40 Series, the new AT4047MP is a multi-pattern version of the AT4047SV microphone. The new addition features the same element as the 4047SV but the model now offers omni and figure-of-eight pickup pattern options in addition to cardioid operation.

IBC2009 will also see Audio-Technica launching the BP892 and BP896 microphones in the Broadcast and Production series. The BP892 replaces the existing AT892 subminiature headworn mic and delivers higher SPL handling and improved sound in a tiny package. With a condenser capsule just 2.6mm in diameter, the new microphone is extremely discreet and available in non-reflective black or theatre-beige finish. A multitude of termination options is also available to allow the BP892 to work with Audio-Technica or other manufacturers’ wireless systems (a wired version is also offered).

A new lavalier mic, the BP896, also joins the range and is the smallest that Audio-Technica has produced to date. The omnidirectional condenser again handles high SPLs and features a durable, low-profile housing with internal construction designed to minimise noise from handling, clothing and wind. As with the BP892, both wired and wireless versions of the BP896 are available, with wide compatibility with other manufacturers’ receivers possible.

Finally, a new headset is added to the Broadcast and Production series at IBC2009. The BPHS-1 is based on Audio-Technica’s M30 headphone and is equipped with a dynamic microphone. The newly designed mic has a cardioid polar pattern and is connected to the left earcup of the BPHS-1 with a flexible boom, allowing the headphone to be reversed with the microphone on the right of the user. The headset features a removable cable, secured with a thumb screw, for easy replacement in the event of damage in the field.

The titanium-finished CKM90 tops the new series and features a balanced armature design for full, rich bass response. Weighing in at just 5g, the CKM90’s lightweight nature belies its impressive sonic stature.

Summer Makeover For Audio-Technica’s Popular ATR Mic Range

Release Date: 07 August 2009

Audio-Technica has announced a revamp of its successful ATR range of microphones, which will see the series slimmed to four models with new model numbers and revised packaging.

The new product designations are as follows:

The ATR25 dual, unidirectional stereo condenser mic becomes the ATR6250
The ATR55 Telemike® shotgun mic becomes the ATR6550
The AT35S mini lavalier mic becomes the ATR3350
The ATR97 low profile omni boundary mic becomes the ATR4697

Technical specifications for the models are unchanged – and in the case of the condenser, shotgun and lavalier models, the microphones continue to ship with mini-jack to ¼” adaptors, mic clips and windshields.

Audio-Technica senior marketing manager Harvey Roberts said, “The ATR range is highly popular with users as diverse as home videographers and corporate customers looking for affordable communication solutions. The move to a four-model line-up simplifies both purchase and stocking decisions for users and dealers, while the new packaging not only makes the products easier to merchandise in-store, but it also brings the ATR range in line with Audio-Technica’s current fresh, modern corporate look.”

Audio-Technica Stereo Shotgun Microphones Follow The Tour De France Through Every Turn

Release Date: 06 August 2009

Viewers of the 2009 Tour de France saw hundreds of racers cover over 2,200 miles between 4-26 July, each vying for the finish line on Paris’ Avenue des Champs-Elysées. They also heard an amazing soundscape of determined cyclists straining to climb mountains, the rattle of bicycles bunching up in the peloton and the crowds cheering them along, thanks to Audio-Technica AT835ST M-S stereo shotgun microphones, mounted to the cameras on five motorcycles that cover the miles-long pack of racers. The AT835ST microphones were provided by the Societé Français de Production (SFP), a division of the Euro Media Group, which has been a longtime supplier of broadcast technology and services to the Tour de France and other major sporting events.

Throughout the race, the motorbike crews covered the action from top to bottom, pacing the riders and collecting crowd reaction effects. The audio, embedded with the video signal, was sent via low-power broadcast to a pair of helicopters and two circling aeroplanes. They, in turn, relayed the signals to three ground relays in trucks, which sent it via satellite or terrestrial links to OB vans located near the finish line.

“We chose Audio-Technica stereo shotgun mics because they are good quality microphone solutions for this application,” explains Luc Geoffroy, CTO of the Euro Media Group. “The mics are robust, with excellent sonic characteristics to pick up sound in a mobile situation, and they can do it with exceptional directivity, providing good rejection of unexpected wind and other noise. They’re lightweight and small, making them a good fit for how we use them on the motorbikes, and they also give us a good stereo image with excellent separation. And they’re very easy to use and highly reliable.”
